This is a custom piece that we designed, from sourcing the fabric, to working very closely with a local seamstress to construct the garment itself, we are so excited and happy to share our Wairere dress edition with you.
Each garment is individually sewn with love and care, right here in Kahungunu, Hawkes Bay.
The Wairere Dress
Wairere translates to flowing water/waterfall, the shape and the way the dress falls is the inspiration behind the name Wairere. This is a flattering design constructed to fit loosely on the body. It not only looks good but feels good too!
Matariki Design
This dress is embroidered with our Matariki inspired tohu (design)
This tohu is called Matariki. She is placed in the centre of this tohu amongst her eight children. The Poutama (ascending) and Pouhine (descending) each represent a learning from each of the stars.
Below is a brief explanation of each star and what they represent.
Ngā whetū o Matariki
-Waitī: Fresh water
-Waitā: Salt water
-Waipunārangi: Rain
-Tupuānuku: Kai from the ground
-Tupuārangi: Kai from the sky (trees birds etc)
-Ururangi: Winds
-Hiwa-i-te-rangi: Wishing star sending Dreams and desires
-Pōhutukawa: the star that takes our loved ones that have passed on to their next journey in the next world
-Matariki: the mother star of all of the above. She herself is associated with good health and well-being for all
We designed this tohu alongside Josh Hurae @Ukaipōarts who really helped bring our whakaaro to life.
